Focus on Exploiting the US Market
Regarding mangoes, there is great potential in the US market. According to data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), mango and mango product imports to the US in the first 5 months of 2023 reached 341.4 thousand tons, valued at USD 492.3 million, an increase of 2.6% in volume and 3.4% in value compared to 2022.
The average import price of mangoes and mango products to the US was USD 1,442.1 per ton, an increase of 0.7% compared to 2022.
Major mango suppliers to the US are Mexico, Peru, and Vietnam is the 12th largest mango supplier to the US in the first 5 months of 2023, both in terms of volume and value compared to the same period in 2022. The import price of mangoes from Vietnam was USD 3,017 per ton, an increase of 32.9% compared to 2022.
However, the share of imports from Vietnam is still very low, accounting for only 0.2% of the total mango imports into the US in the first 5 months of 2023.
In terms of type, in the first 5 months of 2023, the US increased the import of fresh mangoes, reaching 262.3 thousand tons, valued at USD 284.9 million, an increase of 6.2% in volume and 8.5% in value compared to the same period in 2022. The import share of fresh mangoes accounted for 76.8% of the total volume of mangoes and mango products imported. The import of fresh mangoes from Vietnam accounted for only 0.19% of the total import volume.
The remote geographical location and preservation difficulties are the main factors limiting the high import volume of fresh mangoes from Vietnam to the US. Meanwhile, the import of mango juice from Vietnam is increasing, with the import share significantly increasing from 2.73% in the first 5 months of 2022 to 5.84% in the first 5 months of 2023.
For coconut, in early August, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the US Department of Agriculture sent a letter to the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) providing information about the US opening its market to fresh Vietnamese coconuts. This is a great opportunity for local coconut growers to improve the quality and value of their products, contributing to the rapid growth of the export turnover of this fruit.
